Martha J. Gilbert

Bristolville, Ohio - Martha J. Gilbert, 94, died Saturday, April 7, 2018 at Windsor House of Champion. She was born on September 12, 1923 in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of the late Howard and Pauline Stow Johnson.

Martha was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School in 1941 and Mount Union College in 1945 with a degree in Education. She was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority.

She taught elementary classes at Roosevelt (Warren), Ravenna, Parma and retired from Champion Elementary School.

Martha married George F. “Gil” Gilbert on September 7, 1946 and he preceded her in death on October 5, 1998.

She was an active member of the Trumbull Co. Historical Society and served on the board of directors for many years and was instrumental in the restoration of the Edwards House. She visited Colonial Williamsburg many times for historical seminars and crafts.

The Trumbull Co. Historical Society’s annual member of the year award is named the “Martie Gilbert Award” in honor of her many contributions to the organization. She was also a member of the Green Thumb Garden Club, Fortnightly Book Club and the Bristolville Historical Society.

Memories of Martie will be carried on by nephew, Bob Johnson of Mapleton, ME, niece, Lorraine Rosner of London, England nephew, Chris Johnson of CO. and sister-in-law Florence Johnson of Florida.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Robert M. Johnson, and sister-in-law, Louise Gilbert.
