Helen O'Connell

Helen O’Connell of Niles passed away on Monday, November 12, 2018 at 3:05 p.m. in the loving arms of her daughter. She was 104.

Helen was born in Pittsburgh on May 5, 1914, the daughter of the late David and Mary Delynko Zenczak.

She was a member of the National Honor Society and 1932 graduate of McDonald High School. Helen was employed at the Niles Forge & Manufacturing Company and later employed as an assistant librarian at the McKinley Memorial Library where she retired in 1984 with 25 years of service.

Mrs. O’Connell was the oldest living member of St. Stephen Church. She enjoyed going to polka dances with friends and family, gardening, antiques, and working on crossword puzzles and playing solitary. Most importantly she cherished her family and friends.

Her husband, George O’Connell whom she married on May 6, 1944, passed away on November 29, 1957.

She is survived by a daughter, Mary Lee (Jerry) Scarmuzzi of Niles; 3 grandchildren, Nicholas, JJ, and Laurie Scarmuzzi; and a great grandson, JJ Scarmuzzi.

In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Bron Millik and Agnes Balintfi; 5 brothers, Walter, John, Pete, Joseph, and George Zenczak.
