James E. Herriman of 4011 Greenmont Drive S.E, Warren, OH passed away on the morning of Wednesday, October 21, 2020 in his residence. He was 85. He was born May 26, 1935 in Hammond, IN, the son of the late Bernard and Luella (Hootman) Herriman of Peoria, IL.

He was a 1958 graduate of Purdue University with a B.S.I.E. degree. He belonged to Kappa Sigma Fraternity and was a member of Purdue University’s Skull & Crescent and Gimlet Club honoraries. He was a member of the President’s Council at Purdue and was a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association.

It was at Purdue that he met his wife, Katylu Hutson Herriman, whom he married on January 24, 1959.

Jim and Katylu moved to Warren in 1959 after his serving in the U.S. Army. He attained the rank of Captain, serving as a member of the U.S. Army’s Transportation Corp.

Mr. Herriman was senior industrial engineer at Packard Electric Division of General Motors when he retired in 1992. Just prior to his retirement he worked in divisional capital spending and planning as the senior financial analyst. His career with GM also included work in sales, industrial engineering, and he served as a member of Packard’s design team in the 1980s.

Active in many community endeavors, Jim had served as a member of the Howland Local School Board serving as its president several terms in the 1980s. He chaired the planning/implementation committee for Howland High School’s renovation in 1988. He also served on the BOE of the Gordon James Career Center. Mr. Herriman was a delegate to the National School Board Association’s convention in San Francisco, CA, in 1986. He had served Howland Schools as co-chairman of several Howland School levy campaigns. He was past president of both Howland High School Band Boosters and North Road School PTA.

Jim was past president of the Board of Directors of Someplace Safe, a domestic violence shelter. He was past president of Warren Civic Music Association’s Endowment Fund and was a director of Warren Civic Music Association Board of Directors, serving as its vice president and treasurer. He also served on the advisory board of Shepherd of the Valley Retirement Center in Niles, OH.

Mr. Herriman was a member of The Trumbull 100. He served as co-chairperson of the organization/ steering committee of Warren GROWs, later known as Mainstreet Warren. In this capacity he led the effort to restore the West Market Street Bridge. He had served on the cabinet of United Way of Trumbull County, and also served on the Board of Trustees. He served on Warren Redevelopment and Planning Corporation committee on restoration and preservation, and co-authored legislative specifications for Warren’s historical preservation.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church, he was past member of the Endowment Board, and was past moderator of the board of deacons, and also served as elder, trustee, and past treasurer of the church. He was a member and past president of the Two-Sum Forum and member of the Kirk Club.

He belonged to Warren Elks Lodge 295. He was a regular blood donor and donated 14 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. He served as a volunteer at CONTACT, Habitat for Humanity, SCOPE and the bike patrol for Trumbull Metro Parks’ Western Reserve Greenway.

In 2012 he received the Valley Legacy Award as Outstanding Senior for his lifetime of community service.

His hobbies included woodworking, reading, traveling, and cycling. Jim rode his bicycle more than 30,000 miles after his retirement. Jim spoke often about his grandchildren and loved to spend time with them and their parents.

In accordance with Jim’s wishes, he will be cremated, and his ashes will be placed in the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium. Material contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund or Scholarship Fund, 256 Mahoning Avenue NW, Warren, Ohio 44481, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

In addition to his wife, Katylu, he has three sons: Jeffrey S. Herriman (Beth), of Cape Elizabeth, ME; Daniel L. Herriman, (Patti), of Westampton, NJ; and Gregory D. Herriman (Pamela), of Niles, OH. His eight grandchildren are: Katherine, Teddy, Rachael, Maguire, Seamus, Caroline, Riley and Dean. His sister, Nancy Mead, calls Santa Cruz, CA her home.
