Warren

Rev. Dr. Walter P. Carvin passed away on Saturday, December 12, 2020 at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. He was 93.

Walter Carvin was born on December 4, 1927 in Lebanon, PA, the son of the late Rev. Walter and Rose Mae Carvin.

Walter previously lived in Racine, WI and Philadelphia PA. He was a 1949 graduate of Wheaton College in IL. That same year he married his wife, F. Lorene Piercy, on New Year’s Eve. They were married 65 years before her passing in 2014. He studied physics at the University of Pennsylvania until he was called to Eastern Baptist Seminary in Philadelphia, the school his father had also graduated from. He began his lifelong pastorates in Utica, NY, Newark, NJ, Princeton, NJ, and finally at the First Baptist Church of Warren, OH. While in Princeton, NJ, he received the degree Doctor of Theology from Princeton Seminary. He had moved his wife and family to Warren in 1972, where he was a pastor until he retired in 1988. Dr. Carvin taught Philosophy and Religion at Youngstown State University for over 20 years. He was the author of three books and numerous scholarly articles, with his main interest in the relation of science and religion. He was also a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

He is survived by children Rose Lorene Miller (Bob Miller), Elizabeth Manno (George Manno), Rebecca Carvin (Stephen Chernin), and Paul Carvin (Tiffany Meyer); brother Clyde Carvin; 5 grandchildren, Karen Doberstein, Kevin Manno, Zach Miller, Turner Carvin, and Matthew Carvin; and 3 great grandchildren, Tessa, Tony, and Anna Doberstein.

Preceded in death by his parents, sister Ruth and beloved wife Lorene.

Walter was an avid backpacker, walker and omnivorous reader. His passion for backpacking offered him the quiet solace of the woods where he felt close to God. His lifelong journey of faith, teaching, learning and presiding over joyous occasions, and comforting the mournful has concluded. His final steps on his final trail have passed, but the effect of his life on so many will live on.

Donations can be made in his name to Shepherds Foundation  5525 Silica Rd Austintown OH 44515 or online at shepherdofthevalley.com.   We thank Shepherd of the Valley for the many years of care and love given to Walter.
